In the early days of my "discovery" of Old Time Radio, ( about 12 years ago ) I thought for CERTAIN Larry Haines was Elliott Lewis (Mr. Radio) using a different name ! I'm curious, did any of you out there think the same thing ? OR, now that you think about it, don't you think that they DO sound alike ? Post it here or send me an email, I can't wait to find out I'm not alone on this. Finally, speaking of Elliott lewis, does anyone know why (or if) he was'nt approached by CBS or Himan Brown to be involved in CBSRMT ? Rod Serling hand picked Lewis for "Zero Hour" and, CBS DID choose Lewis for General Mills Adventure Theater and Sears Radio Theater. Was there a problem between Himan Brown and Elliott Lewis ?

I thought the exact same thing. He sounds a lot like Elliott Lewis to me!

John

I love Mystery Theater and I love Larry Haines' voice. I've always loved his voice and tried to find out his name when I came across this website. He was an excellent actor and his voice could really express vulnerability which made him very likeable.

Susan Jacobson

Larry was probably quite a bit before his time... I think his sensible, yet occasionally comically unsure persona is a much more common trait in today's actors. More of us can relate with the likes of him than a Bogart or Brando.. Similar actors today... Jason Bateman, or Paul Rudd..

I missed posting yesterday (Aug 3), it was Larry Haines' birthday. Starring in over 80 episodes, Haines was a true superstar of CBSRMT. Some Larry Haines trivia: He won Daytime Emmies in 1976 & 1981 for Search for Tomorrow (1951). Was twice nominated for Broadway's Tony Award: in 1966, as Best Supporting or Featured Actor (Dramatic) for "Generation," and in 1969, as Best Supporting or Featured Actor (Musical) for "Promises, Promises." Former first lady Pat Nixon's favorite soap opera star. Does anyone have a favorite Haines episode?

Frank

I know many will (likely rightfully) say "The bullet", but my personal one is "Golden Time". (Which meant the hours (after regular working hours) when a plumber, which is who Mr. Haines played, can charge a higher rate.) I can think of maybe a couple other RMT actors who would have made good plumbers (Joe Julian, for example), but none who could have you feeling as sorry for him, witnessing a drug deal while merely trying to do his job, fearing/running for his life, and having a happy ending, as Haines did in "Golden Time". IMO.

Kurt

My favorite Larry Haines episode is "The Black Room," but he knocked it out of the park every single time. As Susan Jacobson said, he conveyed a vulnerability that made even the most unlikeable characters fully three-dimensional. What's interesting is that I just heard a 1956 episode of "X Minus One" with Mason Adams, Larry Haines, and Dan Ocko, "Surface Tension," in which Larry Haines was just okay. Each of his CBSRMT performances was so good—and so natural—that he truly made it seem effortless. I guess I'd started to take his talent for granted a little. In 85-some-odd episodes of CBSRMT, Larry Haines was never just okay.

Karen

Yes! I agree that "The Black Room" was a masterpiece for Larry Haines and the author, Karen. It was a touching performance, and no one could have interpreted this character as well as Larry Haines did! Now I'm going to search for the "X Minus One" episode you spoke of! Thanks!

Mendy

Larry Haines One of my favorites, loved him in Death on Project X.

Doug

Larry Haines is my favorite actor.

Sue

My favorite actor

The actress whose voice that I find cheerful, friendly and often a bit ditzy is Lurene Tuttle - first became aware of her as a character in Sam Spade and then realised that she appreared on so many other programmes. But I find Agnes Moorehead's voice irritating most of the time, though to her credit, I think that was often the effect that was sought - but for me it can be like fingernails on a blackboard. And the actor's voice that I'm not particularly fond of (and a choice that may not make me many friends) is that of Orson Welles. I find his voice a bit smug at times and to me it seems that most of the time he is over acting - hard to lose yourself in the character because you always know it is Orson Welles the actor.

Larry Haines (born Larry Hecht; August 3, 1918 – July 17, 2008) was an American actor Haines first became known in the 1930s as an actor on the radio crime series Gangbusters. Playing Joe Lincoln, he was the star of Treasury Agent on the Mutual Broadcasting System in 1947-48, and he had the title role of Mike Hammer in That Hammer Guy on Mutual in 1953-54. He also was featured in The Chase, Cloak and Dagger, Inner Sanctum Mystery, The Man Behind the Gun, and This Is Nora Drake.] It was estimated that he acted in more than 15,000 radio programs in the 1940s and 1950s. Larry is best known role was that of next door neighbor Stu Bergman on the soap opera Search for Tomorrow. He joined the show for its eleventh episode in 1951, and remained on the serial for the show's duration. In this role, which he played from 1951 to 1986, Haines became very popular. He won Daytime Emmy Awards in 1976 and 1981 In 1989, several years after the cancellation of Search for Tomorrow, he briefly joined the cast of another NBC/Procter and Gamble serial, Another World. Larry played the role of Sid Sugarman, Ada Hobson's old boyfriend who escorted her to a gala honoring the show's 25th anniversary. He was later in the cast of Agnes Nixon's Loving., playing Neal Warren, the biological father of Gwyneth Alden whom he reunited with right before she was identified as the serial killer in the slaying of the Alden family and several other characters. In the last episides of the show, his character proposed to old girlfriend Kate Rescott. Stage

Adam

It's sometimes fun to hear the CBSRMT actors appearing in older radio shows. Recently, I heard an episode of X Minus One called "Sam, This is You" with Larry Haines in the starring role. He sounds a lot younger, but his talent shines through, even then. It was about a man who calls himself on the phone from a few days ahead in the future, and it causes a lot of trouble and confusion, especially with his girlfriend, lol! Larry Haines shows his talent for comedy in this and really carries it off. Have any of you heard this episode?

Lou

Larry was great. Great episode! Haines was very good! Didn’t he play Stu on the soap Search for tomorrow for many years?

John

His talent is under appreciated and has risen to the top through this series. Who are the 6 boobs who actually down voted this man?

Ann

I think he sounds sort of like Denis Leary. Maybe because they both have a similar accent because they were from the same place. Just guessing! But I really love his voice and I'm glad he did a lot of these shows. I have also heard him on The Inner Sanctum! His acting is superb, so it's hard not to notice his characters!

Mendy

I hear Willem Dafoe...

Charles

Every time I see he's in the lineup, I know it's gonna be a good one. One of the greatest.

Hexalux

Haines was my favorite CBSRMT actors. He brought so much to his characters. Best ever!

edmcgon

Larry Haines had a prolific career in radio, appearing on dozens of programs before heading to Broadway, film and television. He is best remembered for his 35 year role of Stu Bergman on Search For Tomorrow, for which he won 2 Emmy awards, and his role in the film, The Odd Couple. His radio credits include Gangbusters, The Cavalcade Of America, Man Hunt, Inner Sanctum, The Mysterious Traveler, X-Minus One, Suspense and Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar. His television credits include The Defenders, Maude, Kojak and the daytime soaps, Another World and Loving. His films credits also include The Seven-Ups and Tank. One interesting factoid is that Haines' character of Stu Bergman on SFT was married to CBSRMT alumni Billie Lou Watt's character, Ellie Bergman.

Charlie

Great actor, great voice. The Bullet was probably his best RMT performance. I can still hear him describe that bullet. "Not the one you hear whizz past you, or ping off a rock....but your very own bullet."

Mark

Watched him for many years on Search for Tomorrow. Love his radio work, too. Excellent actor.

Sue

Larry Haines was a bit type-cast in the 40's as the killer or bad guy. CBSRMT allowed him to show many different sides of his fine acting ability. His voice could be so gentle it was heartbreaking. I loved him with his Teddy Bear voice. Pat Nixon watched soap operas, and she had a crush on him!

Robert

Larry Haines had proven dramatic acting chops. He was twice nominated for Broadway's Tony Award: in 1966, as Best Supporting or Featured Actor (Dramatic) for "Generation," and in 1969, as Best Supporting or Featured Actor (Musical) for "Promises, Promises." Yet Mr. Haines was no stranger to comedy ! Immortalized as sarcastic poker player Speed, he holds his own with Jack Lemmon’s Felix and Walter Matthau’s Oscar in the Neil Simon’s film classic, “The Odd Couple”.
