A genius chess player is a suspect in the brutal murder of a friend and opponent.

A call to the police made by a man claiming to have just been murdered, (or at least in the process). Responding to the call is a veteran and rookie cop team, the elder wanting to find the expedient explanation, the younger seeking out all possibilities. The victim, they discover, is the superintendent of a small apartment block filled with potential suspects.
