A complex story within a story within a story. A couple mourn the loss of their son. The mother is particularly distraught and contemplates ending her life when she is visited by a spectre from her past. Cut to a story of an elderly brilliant surgeon who is training a husband and wife surgical team in his pioneering work - the results of which both he and a young ill girl need. The medical couple deliberate over the allocation of resources to the young girl, or the old brilliant man. Everything is brought together in the last act.
