Set in the early 1800's, a dishonest hypnotist is dying and teaches a young doctor the ways of his work. The hypnotist believes that if he himself is hypnotized just before his death, he will not die. The bizarre situation is complicated by the relationship between the young doctor and the other man's beautiful wife.

Hmmm. Another adaptaion of Poe's "The Case of M. Valdemar"... sorta (The Premature Burial). This version really reminds me of the sort of plot that might have turned up in a Roger Corman adaptation... As if Corman adapted the story for a feature rather than just a segment of Tales of Terror The episode is nothing special. Curiously, the host narration at the end purports to demonstrate that the story might be true. Reply With Quote

An old expert in mesmerism who is dying of consumption trades his secrets for a promise from a young colleague to put him under in perpetuity to wait for a cure. The chosen man is also having an affair with the mesmer’s young wife and he knows it. While training, the old man takes advantage of his skills to meet his own goals.

A well-written and well-performed episode featuring thoroughly repellant, self-serving characters. It was hard to feel empathy for any of them.

A good listen, but I agree with Nancy that it was difficult to feel empathy for the self-serving characters.

I love when they include the news from that time.
