This story is set in Italy and involves a young man who travels to another part of the country to study. He takes a room in a boarding house where he has a view of a beautiful and unusual garden that belongs to the house next door. He spots a beautiful girl in the garden and longs to meet her. But, her father is a strange character that has his own ideas about gardening - and other things.

Julie Smyth

A young, aspiring doctor falls in love with the daughter of the local "quack" who raises strange plants for his herbal treatments. Despite the warnings of his mentors, he pursues this dangerous liaison.

Another of those changed titles... This is based on Nathaniel Hawthorne's "Rappaccini's Daughter". And, in my opinion, it's a fine adaptation. Good acting and dialog that sounds, at times, like it was lifted straight from the story make this a very worthwhile epiode. Even the modified ending is not a terrible flaw even if it does blunt the author's moral -- which, after all, may be nothing more than "Man shouldn't meddle in the works of God." or something like that.

Adapted from the Nathaniel Hawthorn story. A young man travels to northern Italy from the south to study medicine. En route he learns of a strange doctor whose studies put fear in the hearts of those who hear. Settling into his boarding home he discovers his window overlooks the garden of the doctor and his beautiful daughter.

This was a pretty good story. I do enjoy some older stories and the impressions it gives of the thoughts and customs of the time they were written. As I listen to these I find that I would like to read more of certain authors, which the adapter of the tales can take as a compliment.

The main character is not a doctor but a medical student. And her father really isn't a crack-pot; he's more of an evil scientist who teaches at the university.
