I cannot believe no one else has commented on this episode yet- the first act is an unbelievable Nail-biter!!! So suspenseful! You know something dreadful is going to happen and you are filled with anticipatory dread that is the heart of Radio Drama! You picture the scene in your mind- icy cold mountain, sheer drop, cable car, Wind!!! I was looking for another snowy atmosphere after listening to Return to Shadow Lake, and this was great! I had not listened to this before because when I read the synopsis I confused it with another episode that sounded similar about a son of a ski lodge owner demanding the cable car be shut down, I'm not sure what the name of that one is but this is completely different! Don't pass it up if you like snowy atmospheres!

Melanie

Did anyone else notice that this story is exactly the same as an episode of the TV show "Alfred Hitchcock Presents?" The episode was called "The Crystal Trench" and it aired on 4 Oct. 1959. Very cool story, though. Hard to believe this wasn't plagiarism.

Snowed in with Blizzard Jonas, and so now listening to the snowy icy episode "Silver Medal", with the most suspenseful snowy cable car ride Ever!! Then go over the the mysterious snowy episode "Return to Shadow Lake", and in its Comments section check out my list of 146 Best CBSRMT episodes! If you are new to CBS Mystery Theater I would not listen in sequential order, where you risk losing interest if you hear some that are not as good(there are 1,399, not all could be great!) I would listen to these 146 Best episodes, and then branch out. I wish others would list their Favorites List!!

Melanie

I like your list. First season there was Preview of Death which is a little snowy.

TO CELINE: Thank you!! Someone FINALLY responded to my request for others to list their favorite episodes! My list is posted on the comments section of my favorite episode "Return to Shadow Lake". As a sort of gift for responding, I recommend that as a lover of CBSRMT you would greatly enjoy watching the old British movie "Madonna of the Seven Moons". Enjoy!!

I gotta admit that it is suspenseful. Scary cable car trapped over a 3,000 foot gorge during a blizzard. That's a nightmare to a lot of people. But it is also unintentionally funny. Possible SPOILER alert. The young newlywed whippersnapper (read complete blithering idiot) decides to ignore his wife's pleas to remain safe in the car, but climbs out onto the roof to free debris in the wheels. Apparently all he needs to free the debris that will stop a half a ton cable car is a nail file. Just in luck every woman thinks of bring a nail file up to the top of a glacier mountain. Now to reach it all he has to do is swing upside down like a trapeze artist with his legs and they can reach it to him. His head is actually outside the window. A few minutes later he does free it with the nail file but a storm cloud has moved in and he gets lost. He can't see the car anymore and has to climb down the cable a long way apparently since it must have stretched. So with much help from the geologist he gets one foot down, but his hand freezes to the cable. Unbelievable. So he has to wait for the rescuers to pull the car in. Which they do shortly but you think he is seriously injured. In the next act apparently he is fine because they go back up to the top of the mountain and the idiot is fine enough to show off and goof around. "Look at me!" he says followed by a long scream as he falls down a deep crevasse to his death. I don't know about you guys but I thought that was funny. Anyways this leads to the climax which I don't think this is very scientific. The wife tries for days to try and rescue him but eventually is convinced by the geologist to give up. He says maybe in your life time a liquid river in the glacier will bring his frozen body back up to the top of the mountain. There is a liquid river but it is at the bottom of the tons of ice. According to physics I believe liquid water is not going to flow up through the ice since ice floats on water, and even if there is no ice I doubt a river is going to flow up a mountain.

My all time favorite episode is The White Wolf!

considering putting together a list of about 150 fave episodes...not easy to do- only wish their was a radio show like this still out there!

After the 5th time he bragged about the silver medal he got when he was 15, I was rooting for his demise. Just sayin'

This episode scared the daylights out of me! Although it was funny to think of the "glacierologist" inviting this young couple he just met to go hang out on a glacier with a box lunch. And the young husband did not listen to a single thing his wife said. That marriage was doomed anyway. Has to be in my top ten episodes.
