This episode followed the original story very closely until Lestrade burst in, threatening to arrest Holmes. Tsk tsk, if it ain't broke don't fix it!!

A Sherlock Holmes mystery.

I really enjoy Kevin McCarthy as Sherlock Holmes especially when the warmth seeps into his voice to convey his concern or humor.

Sherlock Holmes + Christmas = FANTASTIC! Murray Burnett wrote an entertaining adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic story. However, he changed a couple of parts. For starters, this story is set in December 1889, but the CBSRMT writer wrote this tale to take place in December 1893. Also, if you've read the story before, one of the characters is named Henry Baker. But in this CBSRMT episode, the last name is changed to Baker. Why Murray Burnett made those changes, is a Mystery we may never know. The music had the right mysterious tunes. It starts out as cheery in ACT-1, curiouser melodies in ACT-2, and ends with Christmas music at the end of ACT-3. There was a lot music, but enough sound effects. There were doors opening, footsteps, small crowd at the location of Covet Garden, book pages flipping, dog barking, wind blowing, unlocking a door chain, and some grunting. But more importantly, was the Host & Cast. E.G. Marshall masterly gets your attention from the Prologue to the Epilogue. First he describes the location of 221 B. Baker Street, quotes a famous nursery rhyme that goes, "John, John, the grey goose is gone and the fox is off to to his den" which fits perfectly in this mysterious tale, then he mentions Charles Dickens and his work, and ends it with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's other writings besides Sherlock Holmes. And as for our cast, I was very impressed by the talents of Kevin McCarthy (as Sherlock Holmes), Court Benson (as Dr. John H. Watson & Breckinridge), William Griffis (as Inspector Lestrade), and Lloyd Battista (as James Ryder & Henry Smith)! SPECIAL NOTE: You can hear Himan Brown's voice in ACT-1 as he plays Commissionaire Peterson. If you love Sherlock Holmes stories, this is one you don't want to miss. And check out the other Christmas episodes that CBSRMT has done including Ep. #0191-A VERY PRIVATE MIRACLE, Ep. #1140-A HOLIDAY VISIT, Ep. #1092-THAT MAGIC TOUCH, and of course Ep. #0402-A CHRISTMAS CAROL.

Well-done adaptation. I gave it four stars.

This is a great holiday season story. I remember growing up as a kid back in the day, listening to these in Cleveland Ohio on WJW. The cbsrmt did a total of 5 Christmas stories and you can search them above by just entering 'chirstmas '. It's been my holiday week tradition since this website started. Happy holidays and may God bless us, everyone.
