A Sherlock Holmes mystery.

J. Douglas

I rate this episode ★★★★★ for EXCELLENT. This is, hands down, one of the best adaptations from Murray Burnett! His style of storytelling was gripping from beginning to end and stayed true to Arthur Conan Doyle's story. Sound effects of the note, landau carriages, bell ringing, index rack, patrons murmuring at the pub, cups clinking, howling wind, bell tolls, yelling of the crowd, and the policeman's whistle were valuable in this classic mystery tale. Music tracks were adventurous and suspenseful. Best track of all, was at the 26:12 mark when Sherlock Holmes & Dr. Watson were at St. John's Wood and preparing to meet Irene Adler a.k.a. “The Woman.” In our Host’s Prologue, E.G. Marshall informs us all that Sherlock Holmes once failed an assignment and THIS was the story. In ACT-1, he states that Sherlock Holmes thought of Love as nuisance, but might have loved Irene Adler. In ACT-2, the Host points out that Irene Adler was an adversary, not a client. In ACT-3, after the case is solved where Irene Adler outwitted Sherlock Holmes, the great sleuth kept her photo on his mantle. In his Epilogue, E.G. Marshall informs us fans that Sherlock Holmes never again mocked the abilities of the fair sex and always refereed Irene Adler as “The Woman.” Outstanding narrations, but also an outstanding cast: Kevin McCarthy (as Sherlock Homes), Court Benson (as Dr. John H. Watson), Marian Seldes (as Irene Adler and the Maid), and William Griffis (as The King of Bohemia and Godfrey Norton). SPECIAL NOTE: Himan Brown is in this episode playing the role of Boris. Both Himan Brown & William Griffis were gifted on their parts. Both Kevin McCarthy & Court Benson were the perfect match to play their roles. And major props to Marian Seldes as the unforgettable Irene Adler. Another great role she was destined to play. Fans of Sherlock Holmes and/or CBSRMT cannot miss this episode. It’s a classic to enjoy many times over. Until next time…pleasant dreams. =^D
